POTA court to pronounce verdict in 2003

A special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court will pronounce its verdict in the six-year-old Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar twin blasts case.

On August 25, 2003, two bombs left in taxis exploded in south Mumbai - the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in the busy Kalbadevi area, killing 52 people and wounding more than a hundred others.

The court will pronounce its judgment against three accused. They are Haneef Sayyed (46), an auto driver, his wife Fahmeeda (43) and Ashrat Ansari (32).

The attacks were carried out to “avenge” the deaths of Muslims during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

It is the most awaited judgement in a terrorist case after the Special TADA Court completed the March 2, 1993, serial blasts trial in 2007, which led to the conviction of 100 people, including Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. (ANI)

Three convicted in the 2003 Mumbai twin blasts

Desk-Six years after twin blasts rocked the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in 2003 killing 52 people, three persons, including a woman, were today by a special court for the crime on Monday.

Special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) judge M R Puranik convicted Ashrat Ashrat Ansari (32), Hanif Sayed Anees (46) and his wife Fehmida Sayed (43) who face a maximum sentence of death penalty for their role in carrying out the blasts which also left around 100 injured.

The court said it will hear the arguments of the defence and the prosecution regarding the quantum of sentence to be awarded to the convicted persons on 4th August.

The trio have been convicted under various sections of the IPC for conspiracy, murder and attempt to murder, sections of POTA, Explosive Substances Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

The convicts listened carefully to the judge while the verdict was being pronounced and remained silent.

Three more persons had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the blasts, but one of them turned approver in the case.

Two other accused, Mohammed Ansari Ladoowala and Mohammed Hasan Batterywala, were discharged from the case by POTA court after Supreme Court upheld a POTA review committee report that there was no case against the duo.

On 25th August, 2003, two bombs which were placed in taxis exploded and rocked the iconic Gateway of India and the busy Zaveri Bazaar in South Mumbai.

Confession of a captured terrorist

In addition to 9 Out of 10 terrorists killed & 1 terrorist catched his confession as follows

One of the terrorists, 21-year-old Azam Amir Kasav, was caught at Girgaum Chowpatty Naka in Mumbai trying to escape in a car[69] and taken to the Nair hospital. According to preliminary investigations by intelligence agencies, Azam is from Faridkot in Pakistan(near Multan, not to be confused with a town of the same name found in India & had received arms training in Pakistan.Ammunition, a satellite phone and a layout plan of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was recovered from him. He has provided many clues to the investigation agencies and has reportedly described how they arrived at Mumbai from Karachi via Porbandar. He has reportedly said that he and other terrorists had received revolvers, AK-47s, ammunition and dried fruit, from their coordinator. Azam reportedly told the police that they wanted to replicate the Marriott hotel attack in Islamabad, and reduce the Taj Hotel to rubble, replicating the September 11 attacks in India.Kasab also told Indian police that the terrorists targeted Nariman House, where the Chabad center was located, because it was frequented by Israelis, who were targeted to "avenge atrocities on Palestinians."

Mumbai Joint Police Commissioner of Crime Rakesh Maria said, information came out from his interview with Kasab that he is from the Faridkot village in the Okara district of Pakistan's Punjab province. He is the son of Mohammed Amir Kasab.
It is reported that Azam told the police that he and his associate, Ismail Khan, were the ones who shot Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte. According to the police, Kasav entered the Taj posing as a student from Mauritius and had planted explosives in the room.

Azam also revealed that he and his associate stayed in Room 630 in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel where they stored ammunition and had many visitors. They had booked the room for four days using fake Mauritian identities.ATS sources indicate that blood and urine tests on Azam showed that the terrorist was heavily drugged while committing the acts of terror.

On November 29, Kasav named his colleagues as Abu Ali, Fahad, Omar, Shoaib, Umer, Abu Akasha, Abu Ismail Dera Ismail Khan, Abdul Rahman (Bara), and Abdul Rahman. He said that they planned to mostly kill indiscriminately while singling out white foreign tourists and sparing Muslims whenever possible. He also said that he had expected to get away with the assault. Two more names are available: Imran and Shahdullah (or Shadullah) Babar (or Babbar) mentioned above. They called an Indian TV station from mobile phones making demands and justifying their attacks, and gave their names as such. It is unclear if these names are the real names to nicknames mentioned above, or that the information emerging is still incomplete.

Times of India reported that, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the terrorist arrested by Mumbai Police, has told his interrogators that their plan was to get off the dinghy near the fishing village at Badhwar Park, Cuffe Parade, at dusk and strike all targets except Nariman House between 19:00 and 20:00. However, the landing was delayed and they reached at 20.45.

‘‘They knew that the crowds at CST would be thickest at 19.30 and their bullets would cause the greatest harm,’’ said an Indian officer on condition of anonymity. Kasab told interrogators that Cama hospital and Metro cinema were not in their plan which was to take hostages at CST and return to base by hijacking a boat off the Gateway of India.

Kasab admitted that he and his accomplice, Abu Ismail Khan, had put explosives in the cab that exploded in Wadi Bunder.

Investigating police official said the terrorists had spent the previous three months in Pakistan training and planning their strike.

On 3 December 2008, Indian authorities defused a bomb in Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station—one of the first locations targeted in last week's terrorist siege. Location of the bomb was provided by Kasab during investigation.

Four Terrorists on Prowl

Acting on a tip off from a taxi driver, five teams of Mumbai’s Anti Terror Squad have launched a massive man-hunt for three men and a woman in veil (burqa), who are suspected to be terrorists targeting popular spots in city. According to reports, the taxi driver, who drove them around the city landmarks on Tuesday got annoyed by their suspicious behaviour and described them as ‘shady characters’.

Further, the police have taken two persons in custody from the Mira Road area on suspicion. The police officials are still trying to establish any connection between those held in custody and the four being hunted.

Meanwhile, a special cell formed by the Mumbai police is seriously hunting for the suspected persons.

The special cell is getting the active co-operation of Gujarat and Hyderabad police, who are co-ordinating with them.

The taxi driver revealed that two of the four suspects are carrying small bags. The driver, who had been hired by the four, at Rs 2000 per day, for two days, informed that the four roamed around the city starting from Mahim Dargah and visited Haji Ali, Mahalaxmi Temple, JJ Hospital and the Hilton towers- all the popular public spots of the city. If the driver is to be believed, the four suspects appeared to be taking a general overview of these public places.

What aroused the driver’s suspicion was the fact that they talked in hush tones in Hindi. Also the fact that they visited a Hindu shrine as well as a Muslim shrine on a single day was peculiar to him. Further when they asked him to keep a parcel to look after, the driver refused and after a tiff with them, he dropped them off at the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple.

He then informed the police about his suspicions.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Mumbai) has confirmed the incident and has requested the citizens to come forward and help the police.

In view of the recent terror attacks in Ludhiana, Ajmer and Hyderabad, the police are taking the situation very seriously. The police believe that the four were on a recce of the major spots of the city.

Security has been beefed up across the various points in the city and the police have released the sketch of the three men. An official statement is expected later in the day.
