The bombs were placed on trains plying on the western line of the suburban ("local") train network, which forms the backbone of the city's transport network. The first blast reportedly took place at 18:24 IST (12:54 UTC), and the explosions continued for approximately eleven minutes, until 18:35,[2] during the after-work rush hour. All the bombs had been placed in the first-class "general" compartments (some compartments are reserved for women, called "ladies" compartments) of several trains running from Churchgate, the city-centre end of the western railway line, to the western suburbs of the city. They exploded at or in the near vicinity of the suburban railway stations of Matunga Road, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road, Jogeshwari, Bhayandar and Borivali.

The bomb attacks in Mumbai came hours after a series of grenade attacks in Srinagar, the largest city in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. However, Home Secretary V K Duggal said there was no link between the Srinagar and Mumbai bomb blasts.

Mulund Blast Arrests

Mumbai, April 12: Police today arrested three “former” members of the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (Simi) for trying to thwart the arrest of Saquib Nachan, the prime suspect in the Mulund train blast of March 13.

Five persons, all said to be Simi activists, were earlier arrested for engineering the Ghatkopar bus blast on December 2 last year. The blast had killed two and injured 30 persons.

Working in tandem with sleuths from the Mumbai Crime Branch, the Thane district police picked up Takki Iqbal Khot, Moti Iqbal Khot and Hazeeb Zuber Mullah in a surprise raid early this morning. They have been charged with rioting and hampering police work.

Though Thane district superintendent R. Pawar said the trio was trying to shield Nachan, wanted in connection with the blast which claimed 11 lives and injured 70, he refused to say if they were involved in the train bombing, too.

A metropolitan magistrate has remanded Khot and his accomplices in police custody for three days. Police contend that Khot and the others indulged in rioting and led a mob that forced them to retreat when they tried to arrest Nachan from his native village of Padgha on March 26.

The accused have also been charged with distributing “subversive literature”. A senior police officer in Mumbai said though they have been booked for rioting, their role in the Mulund train blasts, too, would be investigated. “There may be a connection somewhere. We are not giving up that premise,” he said.

Nachan, who dramatically surrendered before Bombay High Court on Thursday as he feared the police would kill him in a fake encounter, is now in police custody. The first accused to be apprehended in the Mulund blast case, Nachan had earlier spent 10 years in an Ahmedabad jail under Tada. He has denied his involvement with the Simi or the blast.

Black Friday is film based on the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai which many believe were organised as retaliation for the Bombay riots which left over 1,500 people dead. It was featured at the Locarno Film Festival and received widespread praise.
Black Friday was not released in Indian theaters for 2 years, as on the eve of its release a petition was filed by the persons named in the film, the alleged perpetrators of the crime, seeking a stay. Their argument, which was upheld by the court, was that the film would bias public opinion against them and hence affect the outcome of the verdict which was still pending in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The accused had been charged with TADA, Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act, which carries a maximum sentence of death.
The film was received rapturously at previews in India and abroad. It got a United Kingdom release in 2006 and was released in India on February 9th, 2007. This was nearly 2 years after the film was shot, when the Supreme Court of India gave it the go ahead.

The Bombings

At 1:30 p.m. a powerful car bomb exploded in the basement of the Bombay Stock Exchange building. The 28-story office building housing the exchange was severely damaged, and many nearby office buildings also suffered some damage. About 50 were killed by this explosion. About 30 minutes later, another car bomb exploded elsewhere in the city, and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. a total of 13 bombs exploded throughout Bombay. Most of the bombs were car bombs, but some were in scooters.

Three hotels, the Hotel Sea Rock, Hotel Juhu Centaur, and Hotel Airport Centaur, were targeted by suitcase bombs left in rooms booked by the perpetrators. Banks, the regional passport office, hotels, an airline office (the Air India Building), and a major shopping complex were also hit. Bombs exploded at Zaveri Bazar, Century Bazar, Katha Bazar, Shiv Sena Bhawan, and Plaza Theatre. A jeep-bomb at the Century Bazar exploded early, thwarting another attack. Grenades were also thrown at Sahar International Airport and at Fishermen's Colony, apparently targeting Hindus at the latter. A double decker bus was very badly damaged in one of the explosions and that single incident accounted for the greatest loss of life - perhaps up to ninety people were killed.

The Supermind behind '93 blasts are Dawood Ibrahim & Tiger Menon

मुम्बई Riots

The 1993 Bombay bombings were a series of thirteen bomb explosions that took place in Bombay (now Mumbai), India on March 12, 1993.The coordinated attacks were the most destructive bomb explosions in Indian history. The single-day attacks resulted in over 250 civilian fatalities and 700 injuries. The attacks are believed to have been coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim, don of the organized crime syndicate named D-Company, which had operated as a terrorist organization. It is believed that the attacks were carried out in retaliation for the destruction of the historic Babri Mosque on December 6, 1992, which resulted in nationwide riots that led to the deaths of hundreds of Muslims and Hindus.

Background

In December 1992 and January 1993, there was widespread rioting in Bombay following the December 6 destruction of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya by extreme Hindu groups. Although there was no loss of life in the incident at the Babri Mosque, a series of riots soon erupted throughout the nation, most notably in Bombay. After five years following the December-January riots, the Srikrishna Commission Report stated that nine hundred individuals lost their lives and over two thousand were injured, most of them Muslim, in the riots.

Justice B.N. Srikrishna Commission

Justice Srikrishna, then a relatively junior Judge of the Bombay High Court, accepted the task of investigating the causes of the riots, something that many of his colleagues had turned down. For five years till 1998, he examined victims, witnesses and alleged perpetrators. Detractors came initially from left-secular quarters who were wary of a judge who was a devout and practicing Hindu. The Commission was disbanded by the Shiv Sena led government in January 1996 and on public opposition was later reconstituted on 28 May 1996; though when it was reconstituted, its terms of reference were extended to include the Mumbai bomb blasts that followed in March 1993.

The report of the commission stated that the tolerant and secular foundations of the city were holding even if a little shakily. Justice Srikrishna indicted those he alleged as largely responsible for the second phase of the bloodshed and to some extent, the first—the Shiv Sena.

The report was criticized as “politically motivated”. For a while, its contents were a closely guarded secret and no copies were available. The Shiv Sena-government rejected its recommendations. Since under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, an Inquiry is not a court of law (even if it conducts proceedings like a court of law) and the report of an inquiry is not binding on Governments, Srikrishna's recommendations cannot be directly enforced. Till date, the recommendations of the Commission have neither been accepted nor acted upon by the Maharashtra Government. Many indicted policemen were promoted by the government and indicted politicians continue to hold high political office even today.
